Living the dream: the BMW 4 Series

Where best to experience what makes the BMW 4 Series tick? Ask anybody at BMW involved in its development and, without a moment’s hesitation, they will point you in the direction of the nearest corner. Stiffer suspension, a sportier design and a cockpit focused even more sharply on the driver all mean the BMW 4 Series not only has a more concentrated appearance, it is also wired to the driver’s senses in every way.

When the BMW 4 Series was unveiled for the first time (in concept car form) four years ago at the Detroit Auto Show, it aroused immediate and widespread curiosity. Here was a new model that represented the pure embodiment of the brand’s values even on the outside. And the long, sweeping hood, set-back cabin and low-slung body (which offers excellent everyday usability despite its sporting outline) were all present and correct when the wraps came off the series-production car barely a year later.

Let your eye wander over the road ahead and it is easy to forget the profusion of technology underpinning the BMW 4 Series.

In contrast to most BMW models, the widest point of the BMW 4 Series is found not at the level of the door handles, but over the rear axle, underscoring the coupe’s low, sporty silhouette. The BMW 4 Series Coupe’s center of gravity is 1.6 in. (40mm) closer to the ground than that of the BMW 3 Series, and it has a wider track at both the front and rear. Other ingredients in the car’s dynamic makeup are its set-back cabin and long, sweeping hood, which allows the 4 Series to glide gracefully under the onrushing air.

Now, though, the facelifted model even more dramatically highlights the talents of the 4 Series. Sharply drawn flanks flow harmoniously into the remodeled full-LED rear lights, with the 4 Series reaching its widest point over the rear axle. The tail itself is unusually low to the ground, giving the coupe an impressively dynamic stance. And inside, new electroplated elements and chrome applications, together with the high-gloss black finish of the center console, enhance the air of exclusivity and perceived quality. However, the car’s trick of wrapping its dynamic allure in a compact package remains unaffected by all of this. The sports seats and new, extra-grippy leather sports steering wheel are intended to ensure the driver has things under control in any given situation.

It is not only the design of the BMW 4 Series that accentuates the car’s dynamic credentials; underneath the skin, too, the car exhibits its tauter, more agile character.
