Peak Performance

Join us as we pile into BMW’s first-ever Sports Activity Vehicle® with eDrive technology and take to the rugged mountains and valleys of America’s last great frontier, a place where untouched wilderness meets sophistication, and where luxury has a style all its own.

Jackson Hole

A scenic mountain valley nestled among the Tetons and along the banks of the rushing Snake River, it’s a cosmopolitan hotspot with the spirit of a frontier town that draws discerning travelers all year round.

To test-drive the new BMW X5 xDrive40e, we headed to Wyoming, the heart of the American West. A pristine expanse of untouched wilderness, this is the America of ranchers and wranglers, where winding roads are marked with “Moose Crossing” signs, and coyotes howl in the distance.

And it’s the perfect place to experience BMW’s eDrive technology. With up to 14 miles of zero-tailpipe-emission purely electric driving and acceleration from 0 to 60 in just 6.5 seconds*, it’s a nearly noiseless but remarkably powerful SAV® – delivering high efficiency and unparalleled driving dynamics.

Hugging the mountain switchbacks tightly, the BMW X5 scales the rugged terrain with ease. It merges seamlessly with its surroundings as a man-made masterpiece of engineering that complements the 360-degree vistas of painted skies and snow-capped mountain ranges.

“Jackson’s got a Western elegance. People feel comfortable here.”

Welcome to Amangani

Amangani, which means “peaceful home,” exemplifies the impeccable standards of all Aman resorts. While channeling the unique characteristics of Jackson Hole, the lodge provides an ideal base camp for exploration of the region.

The resort lives up to its name. Despite its soaring ceilings, Amangani’s cozy lounges and plush nooks have helped to establish it as a perennial Reader's Choice Award Winner for “Top 20 Hideaway” and “Top 10 Wilderness Lodge” in the U.S. You can easily while away an afternoon nestled in one of the library’s overstuffed rawhide armchairs. With a fire crackling in the huge Oklahoma sandstone hearth, it’s the perfect place to get lost in a book and forget where you are – that is, until you look up and are reminded by the 360-degree mountain views, visible from every room thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that surround the main hall and lobby area.

Lofty rooms give way to quiet spaces for conversation, and every inch of the resort feels rich, refined, and distinctive. The lobby is adorned with local art and artifacts, including a Native American saddle from the 1890s, painted buffalo hides, and peace pipes. The entire property is ensconced in Pacific redwood paneling, a rare wood chosen for its luxe warmth and character.

Each of Amangani Resort’s 40 suites is exceptionally spacious, featuring a daybed and dressing area, as well as a large private terrace. Bathrooms are spa-like, with cool slate walls, redwood floors, stand-alone showers, and deep soaking tubs that look out across the valley to the mountain range beyond.

The small number of rooms and superb service lend a bespoke quality to the Amangani experience. You feel that you are a guest at the home of a very gracious host rather than a regular guest of a hotel.

This is in part to the credit of the staff. They are attentive without being intrusive, as well as thoughtful, and knowledgeable. Whether you are looking for someone to tell you more about the area’s history or accommodate a special request, they go above and beyond to ensure you have a seamless experience.

Dining at Amangani offers the same tailored-to-you sensibility. Guests can order off-menu items, in-room dining is available any time of day, and James Beard–recognized Executive Chef Rick Sordahl is accustomed to creating dishes for any number of dietary preferences.

The resort’s Grill menu reflects its ranchland provenance. That is not to say there aren’t vegetarian or pescatarian options – there are – but lovers of red meat and game will be especially pleased with their choices. The menu changes seasonally, with most of the produce and meat sourced from small farms and ranches across the region. Local microbrew-braised bison short ribs are a favorite dish, along with lamb loin from Idaho, and a perfectly seared filet of Wagyu beef from a ranch in Oregon. Chef Sordahl noted that during his six years at Amangani, the demand for fish and vegetable-centric dishes has increased, and the menu has evolved to keep pace with changing tastes.

No visit to Amangani would be complete without spending some time at its state-of-the-art spa. Pre- or post-treatment, guests can linger in the 115-foot outdoor swimming pool. Heated to 80 degrees during the winter and overlooking white-capped mountains, it makes for a gloriously restorative experience. You feel utterly disconnected from real life, in the best possible way.

With its Pacific redwood, Oklahoma stone construction and two wood-burning fireplaces, the lofty Lounge is the heart of the resort.

Wyoming's natural beauty, the carefully crafted opulence of Amangani, and the organic experience of driving the X5 were the perfect complements for one another.

Travel Tips for Amangani

Know Before You Go

April is low season, with many hotels, restaurants, and shops closing as they transition between winter and summer. High elevation and a dry climate make it especially important to stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water and be sure to pack moisturizer. You can fly direct to Jackson Hole Airport (JAC) from 13 American cities including Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, San Francisco, Denver, New York, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Seattle and Salt Lake City.

Great Starts

Amangani Homes, that range from three bedroom to over seven bedroom estates, many of which are rented and serviced directly by the superb staff at Amangani, are the ultimate in luxury accommodations. For some local color with your breakfast, Nora’s Fish Creek Inn is a must. Its rough-hewn log cabin dining room offers outstanding morning fare including the local specialty of pink-fleshed mountain trout, served with eggs, biscuits and sausage gravy. It’s the perfect hearty start to set you up for a day of outdoor adventure.

Room with a View

In an area filled with outstanding views – seriously, it’s hard to find a spot that’s anything short of breathtaking – The Granary Restaurant’s might be the best of the best within walking distance to the Amangani. And the menu holds up, too. Elk is the star here, and is served as a tenderloin that is as delicious as any filet mignon. The upstairs bar features live music on weekends.
