The X factor: new addition to the family

When vehicles capture the spirit of their times to a tee, it’s not just new models that enter the market. Sometimes a whole new family of cars is born – as was the case with the BMW X clan.

In 1999 a vehicle was presented for the first time which combined the sporting abilities of a car for the road with the rugged virtues of an off-roader. Today, the first BMW X5 is credited with having given birth to an idea that has been successful the world over. The first BMW X6 from 2008 was developed in a similar way, this time marrying the qualities of the BMW X5 to the look of a coupe. Together with the BMW X1, BMW X3 and BMW X4 models, a whole dynasty of cars has emerged in the course of just a few years. At the Paris Motor Show, BMW presented its BMW Concept X2 design study, a sporty and coupe-like variant of the compact BMW X1. The BMW Concept X2 defines another new segment for the company in the compact class. Like its larger predecessors, the X6 and the X4, the BMW Concept X2 is both sporty and compact.

The watchwords of its designers were “self-confident, cool and with a strong presence”.

This is accentuated by the new, forward-leaning, shark-like kidney grilles and by additional large air intakes at the front. The steeply inclined, darkened windscreen picks up on the visuals of the dark panoramic roof. Together with the cohesive lines of the side windows, they give the body a streamlined silhouette. At the rear, the airstream passes through a spoiler that can be seen under a narrow screen; this neat tail styling also reduces the perceived height of the vehicle and adds to its compact and athletic profile.

Further details such as the wide sills, underbody protection and grey plastic surrounds for the wheel arches and rear of the car emphasise its sporty design. The BMW Concept X2 adds a cool new look to the hallmarks of the successful BMW X range. With this stunning design we can look forward to the concept car soon becoming a fully-fledged member of the family.
